Term 3
Term 3 22 Feb - 28 March 2024

~ A chance to make work with a small welcoming group, with intention, and a spirit of exploration.

It won't matter if you call yourself an artist or have never drawn before. This is a space to create gently. Anchored in nature. Letting images unfold from your observation. Images create visions. Visions create images.

About the facilitator:

I’m Eleanor - a local artist on Dartmoor. I am also an art therapist and facilitate transformational art process for groups. In these sessions I gently facilitate. Call you into focus, bring guidance, dissolve boundaries and create places for new ways of seeing and new technique. It is intended as an evening of warmth, enjoyment and support for the visionary potential of our own imaginations.

Materials:

Some materials will be available, but you will be asked to bring what you need. A suggested list also provided on booking. Opportunities for making winter inks from fruit and plants will be part of the evenings.

Wise rules we follow:  1) use high quality materials and 2) be consistent with the size of your work so that the series you create can hang well in a room. The second is negotiable - but it helps you create a container for a transformational body of work that might come to life on a wall.

The evening starts from 6.30pm. The fire will be on, and soup and local bread will be on offer. You don't have to stay until 9pm if that's a long time for you. I wanted to create a time that breathes, and allows for artistic flow.

Limited to 4 places. £120 for each term of 6 weeks.

NEXT TERM starts THURSDAY 22 FEB 2024

THE ART OF THE SNOWDROP a day of ritual art making in Dartmoor, Devon

DRAWING THE SNOWDROP - a journey of early Spring awakening.

A process of change. A melting, a warming, a letting go, a preparation to generate a feeling of inner warmth, renewal, revival and connection as the light shifts, and we reach the halfway point between the winter solstice and the spring equinox - there is movement in the stillness.

These yearly rhythms of light and dark are in our body chemistry, in our soul life and if you observe carefully, they are alive in our memory, culture, and very much in the flora and fauna that are around us.

The snowdrop is a plant, particular to this time. What can the snowdrop show you? Help you with? Through its form, gesture, essence? Can it ignite some fire, some imaginative thinking?

The Medicine of our Gardens - at Wyse Worts, Dartington UK

Connect to medicinal plants through art

Join The School of Botanical Arts for a day of botanical art practise in the lush medicinal herb and flower gardens at Wyse Worts organic plant nursery

Botanical art has a long history of being used alongside recording and researching the medicinal properties of plants. This workshop will develop your understanding and knowledge of the plants in our gardens by connecting with them through drawing. You will experience how the artistic process itself can bring you into contact with the medicinal characteristics and nature of each plant.

You will be guided through observational and imaginative techniques to develop your artistic skills. Free up your creativity with confidence and build your own unique relationship with the plants you choose to draw.

Taking the time to draw a plant is an unforgettable experience. You will never struggle to identify or remember its name, but will instead carry its medicine deep in your body and your memory.

This will be a really lovely day of herbal exploration and a great opportunity to experience a day in this amazing project in Dartington where plants are intentionally grown for medicine - it will be healing, informative and a chance for you to strengthen your intuition and art skills.

A little about wyse worts..

Wyse Worts is a small independent plant nursery based in Dartington, near Totnes set up by Melissa Harvey who grows a range of medicinal and culinary herbs and  wildflowers. All plants are grown on site organically, many from her own saved seeds, or seeds bought from small companies. She uses re-used or recycled and recyclable pots, peat free compost and little else.

They have areas of herbs and wildflowers growing in different habitats, as well as some beds specifically growing herbs for harvesting and seed saving. "

THE SPIRIT OF HOPE - A four-part art ecology and meditation video series Jan 2023

THE SPIRIT OF HOPE - A four-part art ecology and meditation video series Jan 2023

This 4-part video series is an opportunity to create a series of work inter-connected to teachings of ecology and meditation. The focus is on an observation of nature, nourishment and beauty. A 30min video will be sent on each Sunday of January. January can be tricky. We need the art, beauty and imagination to generate a sense of hope in our soul. When we feel hope, we feel goodness and excitement, it helps us move into action.

  • 8th Jan. Soil & Stars

  • 15th Jan. Seeds & Trees

  • 22nd Jan. Warmth & Walks

  • 29th Jan. Stillness & Growth

Each video will be art-focused and action inspired. There will be sign-posts to plants, science, music and wildlife together with both art historical and contemporary art references. We will work with polarities, because this installs harmony - the first week for example will be connecting to the soil but also the stars and delve into rich deep colours and texture. How do the constellations you are drawn to relate to your connection with the soil?

It is not teaching you to paint. More giving you the opportunity to shape your attention and a sense of spaciousness, developing a practise of both observation and instinct. Think of it, as an opportunity to allow yourself to be free, free in your art practise, open to new connections, and nourished by the timelessness of nature.

Receive 4 videos each Sunday Jan 2023 - only £55 for the bundle. You will be able to watch in your own time, but they follow a rhythm of connection and nourishment for what can be a challenging month. An email will be sent on 1st Jan to encourage you to get materials ready and give you a heads up for each week. Click image below to purchase.

This is a beautiful 6 week series on flowers looking at their archetypes, their relationship to the elements and their individual energetic signatures. From this sweet insight into their qualities, medicinal use, gesture and personalities and from acute observation we can understand how to appropriate particular flowers for both ceremonial use and medicinal use. I relate this especially to the Mexican healing tradition (named in the americas as Curanderismo) as well as working with specific offerings, and the ceremonial dances such as the Moondance. Botanical Art as Medicine ~ Online Workshop

Botanical Art as Medicine ~ Online Workshop

Spring is here (just!) primroses and celandines and narcissi and hyacinth’s are poking their heads up into the garden

Join a botanical art workshop on Saturday morning 6th March to experience how botanical art can be medicine, how drawing connects to the medicine of the plant and how the whole artistic process with plants can bring you well-being. Faciltated by Eleanor Darley artist and transpersonal art counsellor.

Through my therapeutic art practise and my own study I have found that through art you can have a direct experience of the medicine of the plant you choose to draw. The forms inform you, and inform your art.

You can learn from the plants themselves by drawing them. Also, the artistic process and observational practises applied when making botanical art connects you with the life force available to us in nature, and this can be very restorative.

This has an effect on the work you produce, and we will use artistic techniques that will help you to retain a sense of aliveness in your art work. So many pictures end up flat but this teaching will help you capture the spirit and gesture of the plant.

"One does not work by mere imitation, copying a model, but one recreates by immersing oneself in that force by which Nature herself created and shaped man. One forms as Nature herself forms" Rudolf Steiner

In this workshop we will lead with examples and demonstration but with plenty of guided personal drawing time because it is completely experiential. What we will cover:

  • Introduction with a little art history touching on artists who have learnt through botanical observation

  • Observation drawing techniques and the imaginative practise

  • Working in detail and working with gesture

  • Inspirations, learnings, feedback and questions

  • How to develop your practise

Materials:

  • Bring a bunch of flowers, herbs or pick a couple of blooms from the garden. Anything that attracts your attention. Try to see which plant or flower is already speaking to you, or bring one that you’ve always liked.

  • Art materials: drawing pencils, fineliner pens, charcoal, ink, watercolours, round paintbrushes of varying sizes (preferential), A3 cartridge or water-colour paper (I always advice good quality because you always then have the option of framing it)

Online workshop: £40 zoom details sent on booking.

The session will be recorded so you can revisit the information.
