When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it’s your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else

A LANGUAGE OF FLOWERS

Join us at The Apothecary Garden

Sunday 9TH JULY 10am-1pm

A fresh approach to botanical drawing and painting, exploring the dynamics of flower forms and fully embracing the flowers as the ultimate artist's muse. Over the course of the day, we will learn to respond intuitively to the plants by engaging in a sensitive process of observing and listening.

‘Floriography’ is the name the Victorians gave to the learning the language of flowers, but it goes way back in time to our oldest instincts. This language is already in us all. We intuitively know how to understand the qualities of flowers, how their forms reveal their function, and how the soul qualities of flowers can be used in different kinds of ritual and personal connection. This incredible language of flowers can be revealed and awakened again through the artistic process.

Join artist and botanical art therapist Eleanor Darley at the rich flower filled Apothecary Garden to learn specific techniques for capturing the forms, gestures, and personal signature of each flower. In this way you will experience a connection to the essence of the plant, which is a beautiful way to bring your artwork to life.

The Day:

We will start by looking at artists who have brought this type of botanical study to life in their own work. Then some exercises to bring more freedom into our own drawing, strengthening observation and connection to the flowers we study. We will draw plants in their own natural habitat (weather permitting) exploring various techniques of looking, listening, drawing and mark-making. Back in the studio-barn we will reflect and develop work from our sketches, explore plant colour and be free to follow personal inspiration from the flowers. Each person will be guided to create a final composition fully inspired by their chosen flower study.

Expect to be surprised! This class will open the door to just how immediate and imaginative botanical drawing and study can be.
